In the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla, Mateo, a Civil Guard, is tasked with protecting the city's border from African immigrants. After witnessing his partner, Javi, kill an immigrant, Mateo is torn between telling the truth and keeping silent to protect Javi. Meanwhile, Gonzalo, a Spaniard, works in a Cameroonian elephant reserve, but is fired after a disagreement with the guards. He travels to meet his estranged daughter, Sandra, who is struggling with addiction.
