Nine B-17 bombers, including the Mary Ann, took off from San Francisco on December 6, 1941, bound for Hawaii. The crew, led by "Irish" Quincannon, consisted of seasoned pilots and a newcomer, bitter aerial gunner Joe Winocki, who intended to leave the Army Air Corps. They arrived at Hickam Field on December 7, just as the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The crew's lives would forever be changed as they prepared to face the enemy, with Winocki's attitude shifting dramatically in the face of battle.
