A teenage boy named Al Haddin, nicknamed "Aladdin", lives with his widowed mother and grandfather in poverty-stricken Miami. His family's struggles intensify when his grandfather squanders their little income on alcohol and horse races. Al works part-time in an antique shop to support his family. One day, his boss brings an old lamp to the store and orders Al to polish it. As Al rubs the lamp, a genie appears, proclaiming him its new master.
