Ed Avery, a schoolteacher and family man, is hospitalized with a rare inflammation of the arteries and is given a grim prognosis. He undergoes an experimental treatment with cortisone, which leads to a remarkable recovery. However, his reliance on the medication turns into a nightmare as he develops increasingly erratic mood swings.
