In 1974, a 19-year-old named Michael Peterson attempted to rob a post office with a homemade sawn-off shotgun, but was quickly caught and sentenced to seven years in jail. Over the next 34 years, he spent 30 of them in solitary confinement, during which time his alter ego, Charles Bronson, became a celebrity.
