In the picturesque town of Galicia, Moncho embarks on a journey of self-discovery, forming strong bonds with his teacher and friend Roque, while also learning about the complexities of love. As the Spanish Republic faces threats from Fascist rebels, Moncho's father and teacher are drawn into the conflict, and the once idyllic year takes a dark turn, exposing the devastating consequences of fear, violence, and betrayal on the innocent.
