In December 1944, a U.S. bomber is shot down over Japan, forcing Sergeant McManus and Lieutenant Robert to make an emergency parachute jump. After being captured by local villagers, they are spared from execution by the village elder, Fukushima. While Robert adapts to Japanese customs and falls in love with Miyoko, Fukushima's widowed daughter-in-law, McManus refuses to accept his new circumstances.
