In 1943, during the Allied invasion of Sicily, a 2,000-year-old Roman bridge becomes a focal point of conflict between the American and Italian armies. Both sides realize the strategic importance of the bridge and decide to destroy it before the other can. However, the American platoon's chaotic efforts are met with a formidable opponent - an elite Italian military band with a deadly special commando unit.
