As civil war rages in Russia, tensions spread to the East, between the Oural mountains and Shanghai. Old generals, secret organizations, and mercenaries vie for power, attracted by gold. Corto Maltese returns to Shanghai, narrowly escaping a murder attempt and joining forces with a Chinese secret organization, "The Red Lanterns". He and his old friend/nemesis Raspoutine embark on a thrilling treasure hunt, tracking the mysterious armor-plated train of Koltchak, a steel monster armed with cannons and machine guns. Their journey takes them through Mongolia and Mandchouria, where they encounter a cast of colorful characters, including an aviator with a troubled past, an old general who thinks he's Genghis Khan, and a beautiful but dangerous Russian Duchess.
