In a British colony in Africa, a stranger named Deacon arrives, refusing to conform to the community's code. He clashes with the locals, including a businessman, his daughter, a barman, a widow, and others. Deacon's mistake is writing a novel that exposes their weaknesses, which becomes a success back home. As tensions rise, Deacon is cheated, manipulated, and misled by the community members. The film is a demanding exploration of human nature, told through Deacon's direct-to-camera speeches as the river winds its way around the characters like a strangling ivy.
