In 1961, shortly after the Berlin Wall's construction, a group of friends, including Konrad and Sophie, attempt a daring escape to West Germany. While the plan succeeds for the others, Konrad is left behind. For the next 28 years, Konrad and Sophie try to reunite, using scientific congresses to arrange secret meetings. However, in a country where the Stasi monitors everyone, preserving one's privacy and self-respect becomes a constant struggle, even as the Eastern Bloc begins to crumble.
