Lonnie Wilson, a sharecropper's son, returns to his southern hometown after six years on the chain-gang for a fatal car accident. He rekindles his romance with Melinda Marquand, who married Dr. Ned Thomas while Lonnie was in prison, mistakenly taking the blame for her own role in the accident. When Lonnie and Melinda are caught embracing, Dr. Ned's suspicions are confirmed, and Melinda shoots Lonnie, claiming she was being raped. The Colonel, who bribed Lonnie to take the fall, tries to have Lonnie killed to silence the situation.
