US Army Sgt.-Major Lance Poole, a decorated Shoshone Indian war hero, returns home to the Wyoming Territory after the Civil War, seeking a quiet life as a cattle rancher on his family's farm. However, he finds that anti-Indian legislation has changed the landscape, bringing in new settlers who are legally allowed to homestead on the Pooles' land, despite the family's traditional ways. Lance turns to lawyer Orrie Masters for help, and as they work together to fight for their rights, they must confront their own prejudices. Meanwhile, lawyer Verne Coolan seeks to destroy Lance and incite a range war, putting the Pooles' lives at risk.
