Dr. Del Shaw, a scientist from the Doomwatch environmental group, is sent to investigate an oil tanker wreck on the island of Balfe, only to discover a mysterious disease causing disfiguration and violence among the residents. As he searches for answers, he's surveilled by a rifle-wielding figure. His investigation leads him to Castle Rock, a naval dumping ground, where he uncovers illegal dumping of pituitary growth hormone by the Doran Chemical Company. The hormone, intended to stimulate growth, has malfunctioned, causing a disease characterized by bone growth in the hands and brow area among the islanders, who initially blame inbreeding for their condition.
