Widowed Porter Ricks' son Sandy runs away with his pet dolphin Flipper after learning their family home in the Florida Keys is being torn down. Sandy's father returns home to find him missing and sets out to locate him. Meanwhile, a sailboat is hijacked by escaped convicts who take the father hostage and leave the three Hopewell women adrift. Sandy and Flipper secretly help the women, who eventually land on the island where Sandy is hiding. When the convicts return, Sandy and Flipper prepare to confront them.
