A young boy named Little Claude joins a Gypsy family on their travels across France during World War II, seeking a new family after his parents disappeared. The Gypsies, who traditionally move from place to place, are faced with a new law that forbids their nomadic lifestyle. Despite the help of a sympathetic mayor and schoolteacher, the Gypsies are arrested and sent to an internment camp.
