U.S. Marshal Rocky Lane is sent to apprehend a gang preying on local ranchers and businessmen by selling fake "protection" insurance. Led by cunning Jim Crail, the gang attacks Rocky on his way to meet Nuggett Clark, owner of the stagecoach line. Rocky escapes but loses his ID papers, complicating his investigation.
