Maggie Prescott, Editor-in-Chief of Quality magazine, creates a new concept: the Quality Woman, a model who embodies beauty and intellect. She's initially against featuring Jo Stockton, a bookstore clerk, as the Quality Woman, but relents to her head photographer Dick Avery's vision. Jo, who dislikes the fashion world, agrees to take the job, which would take her to Paris to meet her idol, Professor Émile Flostre. In Paris, Jo's worlds collide as she falls for Dick, who uses her to capture the emotions he wants for photos.
