The film chronicles the life of Serge Gainsbourg, from his childhood in Paris during World War II to his rise as a songwriter in the 1960s and his passing at 62 in 1991.

Meet Lucien Ginsburg, a young French Jewish boy with a vivid imagination, who rejects his father's piano legacy and pursues his passion for painting at Montmartre Academy. There, he befriends an unlikely ally, an SS officer, who helps him survive the occupation. Post-war, Lucien reinvents himself as Serge Gainsbourg, a provocative performer who defies conventions through his unorthodox music. Despite his success and numerous romantic conquests, his marriages ultimately end in heartbreak.
