A Broadway matinée idol, Alvin Merle, is found strangled in his dressing room with no apparent way for anyone to have entered. His personal life is tangled, with affairs with his leading lady and his wife, Ethel Wynn, who is also having an affair with the stage manager. As reporter Jim Ryan investigates, he meets Jean Royce, a young actress fired from the play, and uncovers a web of motives among the cast and crew.
