Pete Stancheck inherits a Volkswagen Beetle from his uncle and decides to enter it into the Brazil Grand Primeo formula one race. The car, named Herbie, has a mind of its own and gets Pete and his friend D.J. into various predicaments as they travel to Rio de Janeiro. Along the way, they meet a streetwise orphan named Paco who stows away in Herbie's trunk. As they work their way to Rio, Herbie must protect Paco, Pete, D.J., and their new financiers, Louise and Melissa, from the bad guys who are chasing Paco for stealing film that shows the location of Incan treasures.
