James Allen, a World War I veteran, sets out to find his fortune after returning from the war. He travels across America, working as a skilled tradesman, but after a series of misadventures, he finds himself on a chain gang with a long sentence. After escaping and rebuilding his life in Chicago, his past catches up with him again, forcing him to reevaluate his path and ultimately choose a life of crime to survive.
