A small Texas town, Promise, is plagued by a decade of curses, leaving it desolate, broken, and dying. A couple finds a mysterious boy walking alone, with only a mat under his arm, and decides to help him. The boy's identity and origins are unknown, but he claims to have come to help the town. As miracles unfold, the residents of Promise are torn between believing he's an answer to prayer or a false prophet. The sheriff, Brody, is determined to uncover the truth, but his own struggles to keep the town afloat make it difficult. The truth is finally revealed when the town doctor dies, and the boy pleads with Brody to believe him.
