Two parallel stories unfold at the beginning of the film. Paul, the main character, converses with his alter ego while a girl nearby talks on her phone. She interrupts Paul, upset by his self-talk, and asks him to move away. Paul's argument with his alter ego culminates in his killing it, followed by his decision to end his life by jumping into the river.
