Alexandre Fayard, a writer and college professor, travels to Kyoto to promote his detective story inspired by the mysterious Japanese writer Shundei Oe. He meets with his publisher, Ken Honda, and becomes infatuated with a geisha named Tamao. Tamao reveals that she knows Shundei Oe's true identity as Hichiro Irata, a man who was once her lover but became obsessed with her after she rejected his proposal.
