Post-World War II, Denmark's government forces German prisoners to clear landmines from the country's western beaches. Sgt. Carl Leopold Rasmussen, in charge of a labor unit, initially despises the inexperienced boys under his command. However, as the boys face danger and loss, Rasmussen's hatred gradually fades, replaced by empathy for their plight.
