Clem Rogers, notorious as "the Hanging Judge", arrives in Stone Junction, Kansas in 1889 to preside over Pete Stone's murder trial. However, his task is complicated by Joe Rile, the man responsible for his father's death, working for the influential Big Tom Stone. To discredit Rogers, Stone's henchmen leave Ellie Irish, beaten and half-dressed, in his hotel room. As the trial approaches, the town is filled with strangers in black, all hired to fill the courtroom, and Stone threatens to unleash them on Rogers if he doesn't acquit his son.
