Bev Baldwin, a struggling driver, enrolls in a driving school after failing her test eight times, including one collision with a parked milk float. With the help of her instructor Chris, her driving skills improve, giving her confidence. However, when her husband Ian becomes unemployed and can't afford more lessons, Bev starts taking lessons from Chris again, and her old habits return. She resorts to stealing from her daughter's school trip fund to pay for more lessons. In the end, Bev passes her test at the tenth attempt after her improved driving helps her family financially and prevents a domestic crisis.
