In North Carolina, Dan O'Grady returns from Ireland with stolen gold coins, but the Leprechaun follows and kills his wife. Dan traps the Leprechaun in a box, but has a heart attack before burning the house. Ten years later, J.D. and his teenage daughter Tory buy the house and hire three men to paint it. When one of them accidentally removes the clover from the box, the Leprechaun is unleashed, seeking his stolen gold and starting a crime spree.
