In 1942, Eddie Kurnitz, a traveling salesman, moves his two sons, Jay and Arty, to live with their strict grandmother and aunt in Yonkers after their mother's passing. The boys struggle to adapt to their new living situation, especially with their eccentric aunt Bella, who is hiding a secret. Meanwhile, one of their uncles, Louie, a gangster's henchman, is on the run from a rival gangster and is hiding a valuable black bag. The boys must find a way to make money to help their father and move back home, while Bella wants to get married and open a restaurant with her boyfriend, and Louie just wants to survive.
