Isaac Davis, a 42-year-old writer, has a romanticized view of Manhattan, but his own life is a tragicomedy. He's just quit his job as a TV comedy writer and regrets it, struggling to make a living off his book. He's paying two alimonies and dating a 17-year-old high school student, Tracy, despite knowing their age difference isn't sustainable. His life takes a turn when he meets Mary Wilkie, the mistress of his best friend and college professor, Yale. Despite initial reservations, Isaac falls for Mary, who's aware of her role as the "other woman" and wants a more meaningful relationship.
