Marie Galante, a beautiful French telegram deliverer, is accidentally kidnapped by a drunk captain and taken to Central America. After escaping in Mexico, she travels along the coast, seeking a way back to France. In the Panama Canal Zone, she finds work as a singer and catches the eye of several men, including a Japanese merchant, a German competitor, a British diplomat, and a doctor researching tropical diseases. However, one or more of these men is involved in a plot to sink the US fleet as it passes through the canal, and Marie must navigate a web of espionage and deceit to uncover the truth.
