An orphan named Lewis creates a machine that can visualize memories from one's brain, hoping to see what his mother looked like. However, a strange boy claiming to be from the future warns Lewis about a man in a bowler hat, who disrupts the machine and causes it to fail. Feeling like a failure, Lewis is visited by the boy, who is on a mission to stop the bowler hat man from destroying Lewis. To prove his identity, the boy takes Lewis to the future, but their time machine breaks down, stranding them there until they can repair it.
