In September 1973, American journalist Charles Horman arrives in Chile to reunite with his wife Beth and return to New York, but his plans are disrupted by a US-backed military coup. Charles is arrested, and his father Ed, a conservative businessman, arrives to search for him. Ed's faith in his government is shaken when he uncovers the truth about his son's disappearance.
