The film is based on the true story of Robert Denard, a mercenary who fought in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1960s. Denard defended President Mobutu, who seized power in a coup, despite pressure from the French government, which backed Mobutu's rival Moïse Tshombé. Denard remained loyal to Mobutu until he discovered his leader's intention to kill him, prompting him to plan Mobutu's assassination. However, the French government ultimately switched sides to support Mobutu, and Denard was rescued after being injured in a battle against Mobutu's troops.
