In the 1930s, Odessa and Moscow are the settings for the first Soviet musical comedy, Merry Fellows. Kostya Potekhin, a humble shepherd, is mistaken for a renowned international concert star and falls for Anyuta. To impress her, he pretends to be the "star," leading to a series of comedic musical numbers. As the leader of a jazz band, he gives a hilarious performance at the Odessa Music Hall and eventually earns a spot at the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
