Music Inn, a legendary haven in the Berkshire Mountains, Massachusetts, flourished from 1951 to 1960 under the guidance of Stephanie and Philip Barber. This unique institution brought together America's greatest jazz and folk musicians, as well as scholars and critics, for "Roundtables" and "Workshops." The first School of Jazz was established, where students learned from and performed with accomplished masters. The Inn's proximity to Tanglewood Music Festival fostered cross-pollination between classical and jazz music. Notable participants included Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, and Louis Armstrong, among many others. During a time of paranoia and intolerance, Music Inn was a bold experiment in racial and cultural harmony, accepting students from around the world and launching careers and legends.
