After returning from Iraq, Jack Armstrong was diagnosed with an unknown illness and sent home to his wife Lizzie's care. Miraculously, Jack recovered, but Lizzie passed away in a traffic accident. Jack decided to take their two children, Mikki and Cory, on a summer vacation to his in-laws' beachside cottage in Channing, which Lizzie had always considered her "palace". However, the reality of the rundown property and Jack's struggles to be both father and mother to the kids, as well as his complicated relationship with Lizzie's mother Bonnie, created issues.
