In 14th century Japan, a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law struggle to survive in a field of reeds, fending off warriors and soldiers for food. When a neighbor, Hachi, defects from the war and returns home, the women learn that their son and husband died during a supply heist. Hachi begins an affair with the young widow, who sneaks out at night to be with him. When the mother-in-law discovers the affair, she begs Hachi to leave her daughter-in-law alone, but he ignores her and continues the tryst. Meanwhile, the mother-in-law uses a demon mask to haunt her daughter-in-law, but things take a surprising turn when she decides to remove the mask.
