John Skillpa, a shy bank clerk in a small Nebraska town, leads a solitary life due to circumstance. He has dissociative identity disorder, with a female alter ego named Emma who remains hidden behind curtains. John's past abuse by his mother may have caused his condition. Emma helps John with daily tasks, but their life is disrupted when Emma is exposed to the world after a train derails in their backyard, shining a spotlight on the Skillpas. Emma meets the mayor and his wife, as well as a young single mother, Maggie, whose son was fathered by John. The attention leads to cracks in John and Emma's relationship.
