During World War II, a British officer is dispatched to a seemingly peaceful village to uncover the truth behind whispers of German spies and growing unease among its inhabitants.

The film explores the devastating effects of war, as a British officer investigates a rumor of German spies in 1940. Meanwhile, three land girls and a German refugee family arrive in a small village, where they become entangled in a tragic web of war hysteria, ultimately falling prey to a violent mob, while the officer tries to save them.
