Polish countryside during World War II: Intellectual artist friends gather in Warsaw, where Witold meets Frederick, a charming stranger. They bond, and Frederick joins Witold on a visit to his friend's home, where they become fixated on pairing Hipolit's teenage daughter, Henia, with a young farmhand, Karol.
