Rembrandt background

Rembrandt

The artist, once lauded for his innovative talent, struggles with the weight of solitude and scathing criticism as he grapples with the devastating loss of his beloved wife.

At the peak of his success in 1642, the painter's life takes a dramatic turn after the sudden death of his beloved wife, causing his art to become increasingly dark and satirical, alienating his patrons. As his fortunes dwindle by 1656, he finds solace in his forbidden love affair with the beautiful maid Hendrickje, despite facing social isolation. Ultimately, the film concludes with the painter's frail but unbroken spirit in his final year, 1669.
