A Vietnam veteran, Major Charles Forsythe, is a brutal commander who was "fragged" by his own men. He's denied promotion due to injuries during training and takes out his anger on his pregnant wife, causing her to miscarry. She begins running, meets a paraplegic former Olympic runner, and decides to enter the Rome marathon to avenge her baby's death and humiliate her husband.
