A group of orphaned children are transported by train to Manitoba after their orphanage burns down. At a stop in Scourie, Ontario, Patsy meets Victoria and Patrick McChesney, who decide to adopt her, agreeing to raise her as a Catholic since she was previously baptized. However, problems arise when a school bully spreads false rumors that Patsy set the orphanage on fire, leading the local newspaper to target Patrick, the town reeve and politician. Despite the setbacks, Patrick defends Patsy when she's accused of setting a new school fire, and the community ultimately comes to accept her.
