Bart, a publishing clerk, writes a novel and marries his former girlfriend Mildred, who got his book published. After divorcing his wife Peggy, he struggles to write meaningful work and resorts to writing trash to support his new wife. However, when he reunites with his five children, including his daughter Margaret, his priorities shift, threatening Mildred's future.
