Young-adult siblings Johnny and Victoria Barton, British nationals, arrive in Paris for the World's Exposition in May 1889. While Victoria is excited for their 48-hour stay, Johnny is preoccupied with the trip's logistics. However, their plans change dramatically when Victoria can't find Johnny and the hotel staff deny his presence, claiming he never checked in. With no proof of Johnny's existence, Victoria must find someone to corroborate her story, leading her to George Hathaway, a fellow British national and artist, who helps her uncover the truth behind Johnny's disappearance.
