On the eve of his 30th birthday, Herman Spooner, a used car salesman, lives with his parents in Monrovia and struggles with social isolation. He meets Rose, a young woman on her way to the Philippines for a teaching job, and becomes smitten. Spooner goes out of his way to impress her, inflating his resume and making special arrangements for her car repairs. As he tries to keep her in town, he must confront whether his romantic fantasy will ultimately lead to a genuine connection or another failed attempt at reality.
