John Winger, feeling his life has gone nowhere, convinces his friend Russell to enlist in the army despite their lack of soldier material. They join a misfit platoon in basic training, clashing with their drill sergeant, Sergeant Hulka. Two MPs, Stella and Louise, help them out of trouble. The platoon is at risk of not graduating, but they're sent to Italy for a new urban assault vehicle test. John and Russell take the vehicle for a unauthorized test drive to visit Stella and Louise, leading to the rest of the platoon getting caught behind enemy lines in Czechoslovakia. John and Russell must show their mettle as soldiers and test the EM-50's capabilities to rescue their platoon without US army assistance.
