In a small town, a charming con artist assumes the persona of a renowned gunslinger, catching the attention of two competing mining companies.

James Garner stars as a charming ladies' man who must go on the run after his latest conquest turns against him. With an embarrassing secret that needs medical attention, he enlists the help of a town's resident free spirit to impersonate a famous gunslinger, hoping to pay off his debts and escape before the real gunslinger arrives.
